The Mercantour territory

With a length of 150 km, the territory extends over six valleys in the Southern Alps and covers two departments of France: the Alpes-Maritimes for about two-thirds of its surface, and the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence. The crystalline massif of the Mercantour National Park has valleys filled with the scents of the Mediterranean, Provence, the Alps and Italy. Verdon, Cians-Var, Ubaye, Tinée, Vésubie and Roya-Bévéra: each valley has its own distinct character!

The Mercantour Écotourisme association, as its name suggests, develops ecotourism, a form of responsible travel in natural areas that contributes to the protection of the environment and the well-being of local populations. Alongside the Mercantour National Park, it is a member of the European Charter for Sustainable Tourism (ECST).

L’Observatoire Barcelonnette Mercantour bénéficie d’un environnement exceptionnel. Bien bien plus qu’un observatoire astronomique, c’est un véritable centre de découverte de l’astronomie et de la biodiversité nocturne unique en son genre.

La commune de Barcelonnette fait partie du territoire de la Réserve Internationale de Ciel Étoilé (RICE) Alpes Azur Mercantour.
