From fortified city to the largest natural lake of altitude of Europe...
Bathed in Mediterranean light, the Haut Verdon blends forests, mountainpeaks, lakes and meadows. In these dry mountains, lawns are grazed by sheep and cows. Torrents will spawn a passage in black marl, forming large ravines slopes.
It is in this sector that you'll find the Allos Lake, the largest natural lake of Europe at this altitude (2200 m). Dug 20 000 years ago by a glacier, it is surrounded by the five sandstone mountains of Annot rising to over 2500 metres. The summit of mont Pelat (3051 m), frequented by eagles, marmots, stoats, ibex, rare insects, offers an exceptional view on the lake and, in clear weather, you can see from the Sainte Victoire to the Mont Blanc mountain...
Multifaceted, the valley combines more traditional farms, winter sports stations, fortified cities such as Colmars les Alpes... There is something for everyone, sliding from natural history into cultural history !
